Nice girls, good music.

Nickname: Katie

Age: 19

City: New York

Top 5 Favorite Albums:
Super hard… I’m gunna cheat a little bit and form semi-related categories… so:

1. Velvet Underground’s Loaded or White Light/ White Heat depending on my mood; the Sonics’ Introducing the Sonics; New York Dolls’ self titled; The Jam’s The Sound of the Jam compilation

2. Devendra Banhart’s Cripple Crow; Akron/ Family’s self titled; Vashti Bunyan’s Just Another Diamond Day

3. The Shins’ Wincing the Night Away; Animal Collective’s Sung Tongs

4. Sparklehorse’s Dreamt For Light Years In The Belly Of A Mountain; Spiritualized’s Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space; Olivia Tremor Control’s Singles And Beyond compilation; The Brian Jonestown Massacre’s Their Satanic Majesties’ Second Request

5. The Zombies’ Odessey & Oracle; The Kinks’ One for the Road; Simon & Garfunkel’s Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme

What band would play at your ideal wedding?
Erm, Devendra. And I’d aspire to manipulate people into dancing awkwardly to him. And there’d be some sort of hippy activities going on. Or, perhaps I’d go in the opposite direction and resurrect Edith Piaf, and have her sing some tunes while people perhaps jitterbug or foxtrot to her, dressed up all proper and tragic and romantic. Yes, I think I’d have it be half tragically romantic themed, half hippy themed. Costumes of the sort would be provided, as well as amazing French food.

If you had a kid, what would be the first song you played for it?

Hmm, off the top of my head, I’d say CSNY’s Find the Cost of Freedom, ‘cause my dad used to play that for me, or Simon and Garfunkel’s Bookends. Those may impose a sort of premature sense of melancholy on the kid, though, so I’d have to think of a few lighthearted songs to throw in the mix…

What decade are you most nostalgic for and why?
Mmm, nostalgia… a longing for something that never was or will be. So, I’m nostalgic for the idealized and glorified late 60’s counterculture—supposedly a time where protests were more effective and when good concerts were (for the most part) free and when there seemed to be some sort of strong, prevalent community where people liked trees as much as I do now.

What’s your favorite venue?
St. James Church! But that’ll never happen again… so, I like Shea Stadium or the Newsonic Loft. And I went to a pretty rad party in Jamaica Plain in Boston recently—in the basement of a house that’s apparently dubbed ‘the moth house’… free admission, free beer, indoor smoking, an interesting variety of down-to-earth music and people.

What qualities do you possess that would make you an ideal hipster wife?
Well, to revert to gender stereotypes, I like cooking. Although, only vegan food, so I’m not sure if that’s a plus, but it’s probably hipster… I do make great vegan food, though, I promise. As for other hipster wife qualities—I own a bike, so we can go on awkward bike rides together. I’ll smoke the occasional cig with you and can even roll you one if you’d like. I’m good at putting up with any possible bullshit you may throw my way. There’s no way you can dress too eccentrically for my liking. If you are a hipster musician, I can sing in your band (and I have a theremin available for your use). And I’m really not as intense in person as I may seem in this questionnaire—I just don’t know when to stop writing—therefore I wouldn’t be the outwardly overbearing, emotional type, but rather would be generally nonchalant (which is certainly hipster).

What do you look for in a potential hipster husband?
A combination of a seemingly nihilistic, self-destructive artist who is secretly passionate, and an adventurous, fascinated hippie freak… not to be too specific, or fanciful, or anything… But really, just someone whose presence enchants me to stop thinking so goddamn much.

Wild Card: if you could run away anywhere for a week, where to and what it do?

Is this with my hipster husband? I’m guessing so. Perhaps I’d like to go into the middle-nowhere-Vermont, and sleep under waterfalls, record nature sounds, and perhaps mistakenly eat psilocybin mushrooms thinking they’re shiitake? They probably don’t grow up there though, so sleeping under waterfalls and recording nature is just fine.

You can definitely find shrooms growing wild in Vermont. There is a strain that’s happier in the summer and one that’s happier in the winter. The Audubon Mushroom Field Guide is a good way to know what to look for and make sure you don’t get poisoned!

“when good concerts were (for the most part) free”

Katie, you need to add the movie “Festival Express” to your Netflix queue. You will enjoy it.

Come to Australia and hang on some beaches. We won the scrabble game with the bros, so they’re all hipster territory now.
